Out of Rhythm: How Light Pollution and Heat Are Rewiring Our Sleep

Every cell in the body keeps time. Deep in the brain, a cluster of neurons called the suprachiasmatic nucleus acts as a master clock, syncing thousands of biological processes — hormone release, body temperature, metabolism, immune activity — to the roughly 24-hour rhythm of day and night. For most of human history, that clock was set by a single reliable signal: the rising and setting of the sun. But in the span of a few generations, we have flooded the night with artificial light and warmed the dark hours in ways evolution never prepared us for. The result is a quiet epidemic of circadian disruption, and it is reshaping the architecture of human sleep.


Light is the most powerful cue the master clock responds to, and we now bathe in it around the clock. Artificial light at night — from streetlights, screens, and the sky-glow that hangs over cities — suppresses melatonin, the hormone that signals the body to prepare for sleep. Blue-enriched light from LEDs and devices is especially potent, tricking the brain into perceiving a perpetual dusk that never quite becomes night. Satellite data show that the illuminated portion of the planet grows by roughly two percent each year, meaning fewer and fewer people ever experience true darkness. The consequence is not only difficulty falling asleep but a misalignment of the entire internal schedule, so that the body's biology and the clock on the wall drift out of agreement.


Heat compounds the problem in a way that is easy to overlook. The body's core temperature naturally dips at night, and that decline is itself a signal that helps initiate and deepen sleep. Warmer nights blunt this cooling, making it harder to fall asleep and harder to stay in the restorative stages of rest. Analyses of sleep data from around the world have found that higher nighttime temperatures reliably shorten sleep duration, with the effect falling hardest on the elderly, the poor, and people in already-hot regions. As climate change pushes nighttime lows upward — often faster than daytime highs — the thermal environment for sleep is deteriorating precisely where relief is least available.


What suffers most is the internal structure of sleep, or its architecture. A night's rest is not uniform; it cycles between light sleep, deep slow-wave sleep, and REM sleep, each serving distinct functions. Deep sleep clears metabolic waste from the brain and consolidates the body's physical repair, while REM sleep supports memory and emotional processing. Both light exposure and heat preferentially erode these deeper stages, leaving sleep that is longer on quantity than quality. You can spend eight hours in bed and still wake unrestored if the clock was scrambled and the deep stages were cut short — a fragmentation that accumulates night after night.


The downstream costs are substantial. Chronic circadian disruption is linked to a striking range of conditions: obesity, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, weakened immunity, depression, and certain cancers. A clock that is perpetually out of sync throws off appetite hormones, glucose regulation, and mood chemistry, so the damage extends far beyond feeling tired. Shift workers, who live in a state of enforced circadian conflict, show elevated rates of many of these illnesses — a preview of what milder but widespread disruption may be doing to the general population.


The encouraging news is that the circadian system is responsive to change. Dimming and warming indoor light in the evening, reducing screen exposure before bed, keeping bedrooms cool and dark, and seeking bright natural light in the morning can all help realign the clock. At the community scale, thoughtful lighting design — shielded fixtures, warmer color temperatures, and simply using less light where it isn't needed — can restore darkness without sacrificing safety, while cutting energy waste in the process. Protecting the night sky turns out to be inseparable from protecting human health, another reminder that the rhythms of the natural world and the rhythms of the body were never really separate to begin with.
